How do I sell RECs?

PJM EIS - SolarRenewable energy certificates (RECs), also known as renewable energy credits, are electronic certificates that identify characteristics such as: location, emissions, fuel source and the date the generator went online.

RECs are the commodity traded in compliance markets in states that have Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) programs. In these markets, electric distribution companies and electric generation suppliers must acquire a certain threshold of RECs to meet state compliance. Compliance market rules vary by state, as do fuel types (wind, solar, landfill gas, etc.), geography and applicable dates.

The REC owner can:

  • Advertise credits on the GATS Bulletin Board.
  • Check the Buyer's Bulletin Board for specific purchase requests.
  • Work with an aggregator or broker to either purchase the RECs directly, or to assist the REC owner in finding a buyer.
  • Use an auction or exchange platform to sell RECs. The GATS Bulletin Board is a free option available to all GATS subscribers, while other avenues may have applicable fees and conditions.

GATS Bulletin Board

The Bulletin Board allows buyers and sellers to connect with each other.

  • REC Postings
REC owners can post credit(s) for sale directly from their GATS account. Price information is optional. The buyer can then see the REC details and the seller's contact information.

Agreements through the Bulletin Board are made on a bilateral basis between buyers and sellers. Once an agreement is made, the seller transfers RECs from the Bulletin Board to the buyer.

  • Purchases
Buyers can post specific criteria for what they are looking to purchase on the Buyers Bulletin Board. Sellers can then check the buyers' requests and contact information.
